Building Surface Noise

This sound workshop explores the textures and rhythms of building surfaces. Together we make a small, portable record sylus each using contact mics and gramaphone needles. You are then asked to record as many different surfaces as you can find.

Surfaces can be played in various ways be varying speed and pressure.

Transmission + Interference

Transmission and interference will be explored using devices that transmit audio through laser light using hacked laser pointers. There will be an introduction to these devices followed by the construction of an interactive installation in which the participants will build a network that remixes the sonic space of the Arts Centre. Built into this installation will be playful forms of interference that also allow for audience participation. The aim is for the installation to stay up in the gallery after the workshop for a period of time where the public can experience it

Invisible Soundscapes

This workshop will be a sonic investigation of the city's noises hidden from human hearing. Using specialised devices and recording kits the city will be scanned by the participants and then played back in the gallery in a mini performance at the end of the day. The investigation will unearth the sonic qualities of the electronic devices that surround us today including – mobile phones, electronic signs, ATM machines, laptops, WIFI etc...

Re-Paik

This workshop explores cassette tape and the walkman and is inspired by "Random Access" by Nam June Paik. Various elements of the material are explored requiring workshop participants to be playful and bring their own ideas. Tape players and tapes are hacked to control speed, delay and loops sometimes using arduino.

Contact

Contact mic, contact speaker and hydrophone making workhop. Exploring the mighty piezo disc and what can be achieved in a couple of days (have to wait for the plasti dip to dry!) and what sounds can be unearthed.
